The rolling countryside lends itself to lovely hiking or cycling trips. The landscape consists of meadows with sheep, small villages and polder areas with special flora and fauna. Just before the Afsluitdijk lies Den Oever, an attractive fishing village and a paradise for nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet. Various activities are organised from here, such as mudflat hiking, shrimp fishing, dew walking, sport fishing and, in summer, spectacular seal trips from the harbour to the Wadden Sea. The most unique thing is to see the inside of the Tuna, a huge submarine. Den Helder also has a lively nightlife area, excellent restaurants, numerous shops, cinemas, a beautiful theatre.
