Mayrhofen - Overview

The charming village of Mayrhofen is located in the picturesque upper Ziller Valley, Austria, and is a fantastic ski resort for families and adventurers alike. With one of the most lively apres-ski scenes in the region, you are guaranteed to have a great time.

With two local ski areas catering to skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels, Mayrhofen is one of the best destinations in the Austrian Alps for a top-end skiing experience. Many tourists return year after year to this charming village to experience the ambience of a lively yet authentic ski resort. If you want somewhere to enjoy an après ski experience similar to the French Alps but prefer a more traditional setting, this is the place to visit.

Mayrhofen has managed to preserve its local traditional culture and heritage while welcoming growth into a larger resort offering more facilities to tourists. This balance has created the perfect fusion of old and new: quaint ski village meets high-end ski resort. Guests can enjoy traditional architecture regardless of size while sampling some of the finest ingredients and Tyrolean dishes.

As a well-established ski resort, Mayrhofen offers excellent facilities, amenities, and convenient transportation connections to neighbouring resorts and regional towns and cities. A complimentary bus service operates between the lift terminals and accommodation in the centre of the village and on the outskirts, meaning guests have a wide choice of places to stay with convenience.

Mayrhofen's expansive slopes comprise two ski areas at the southern end of the resort's main street. Many lifts accommodate families and skiers of all levels, and the direct-access lifts are conveniently spaced only 200m apart.

To the south of Mayrhofen is the small area of Ahorn, which is accessible via the Ahornbahn cable car. To the west, you will be welcomed by the larger area of Penken, which is accessible through the gondola.

Mayrhofen – Ski Map & Pistes

Mayrhofen’s main Penken ski area is accessed via a gondola near the Ziller River, just off the resort’s main street. Additionally, the slopes can be reached through two more gondolas in the neighbouring villages of Hippach and Finkenberg, connected by a bus service.

The Penken area encompasses the interconnected slopes of Penken, Horberg, and Rastkogel mountain sectors, shared with the aforementioned linked villages.
It offers a decent selection of high-quality blue runs and a variety of challenging red runs. Among them is the notorious 'Harakiri’, boasting a gradient of 78 per cent and acclaimed as Austria's steepest piste.

The area is also home to the renowned Vans Penken Park, one of Europe's premier snowparks, attracting top professionals from across the continent. Originally crafted by the legendary local crew, the Aësthetikers, the park continues to improve each season, fostering the vibrant freestyle skiing and snowboarding culture that defines Mayrhofen.

The Penken area is lift-linked to the Eggalm slopes above Lanersbach, expanding the range of skiable terrain. It predominantly features challenging red runs, including a 1,000m vertical descent on piste 77.

One significant drawback is the absence of ski runs directly to Mayrhofen. Only unlisted 'ski routes' lead to the valley at Finkenberg and Hippach, accessible when snow conditions are optimal. This lack of lower runs can result in long queues as skiers and snowboarders return from the mountain at the end of the day.

Mayrhofen's second ski area is situated on the opposite side of the valley, on the separate Ahorn mountain to the south.

The Ahorn is ideal for beginners, offering direct access from Mayrhofen via a large cable car. It features an extensive area for novices alongside gentle blue slopes served by a swift 8-seater chairlift, a couple of additional blue runs and a short red run for skill development. The main attraction here for more experienced visitors is the 5.5km long red run that descends from the summit to the valley.

Mayrhofen is also part of the Zillertal Superski group of resorts. The comprehensive lift pass for the entire area covers three additional ski areas in the region, including the year-round slopes on the Hintertux Glacier at the head of the valley.

Lifts and Queues

The Mayrhofen resort has 43 lifts in total, including three cable car lifts, seven gondola lifts, and various chair and drag lifts, making it accessible to all. However, being one of the most accessible and highly regarded resorts, it can get busy during peak season, so it is always best to consider when to head up the mountain.

The Penken area can become quite crowded as it is where the ski schools meet and the base of the main ski area in Mayrhofen. Avoiding this area at ski school pick-up and drop-off times is best. The Penkenbahn gondola can take many people at a time, so it does get people on the slopes and has helped reduce queues since its installation.

Special features

Mayrhofen offers a wide selection of additional features, such as a snow park and kids' lands, to keep skiers of all levels entertained on the slopes.

It is also one of the best resorts to visit if you are disabled. Mayrhofen is well suited to those with disabilities and mobility issues. In particular, the Ahornbahn is considered one of the best areas, equipped with accessible parking spaces and spacious entrances to the gondolas and lifts. It is also a mono-ski-friendly resort with facilities and lifts that help make a memorable experience for all guests.

Mayrhofen - Off-Piste, Backcountry & Ski Touring

Mayrhofen Ski Resort offers thrilling opportunities for off-piste skiing, backcountry skiing, and ski touring, providing adventurous skiers with an exhilarating mountain experience. With its vast terrain and diverse mountain ranges, Mayrhofen presents a playground for those seeking to explore beyond the groomed slopes.

Off-piste skiing

The Penken area is a prime destination for off-piste skiing. It boasts a range of options, allowing skiers to carve their own tracks through the powder. Head towards the Horberg or Rastkogel mountain sectors, where you'll find exciting off-piste areas that cater to various skill levels. These regions offer a mix of challenging descents and open slopes, ensuring there's something for everyone.

However, it's important to note that off-piste skiing can be hazardous, so it's recommended that you have the necessary skills, knowledge, and safety equipment. Hiring a local mountain guide who can navigate the terrain and provide valuable insights is also advisable.

Backcountry skiing

Backcountry skiing enthusiasts will be delighted by the possibilities Mayrhofen offers. The surrounding mountains and valleys provide endless backcountry terrain waiting to be explored.
One popular backcountry route is the tour from Mayrhofen to the Schlegeis reservoir. This journey takes you through breathtaking landscapes, untouched snow, and serene alpine scenery.

However, as backcountry skiing involves venturing into unpatrolled and unmarked areas, it's essential to be well-prepared with avalanche safety equipment, including a transceiver, shovel, and probe. Familiarise yourself with the local avalanche conditions and weather forecasts before setting off.

Ski touring

Ski-touring lovers will find a wealth of options in Mayrhofen. The Ahorn mountain area is an excellent starting point for ski touring adventures. Ascend the slopes using touring skis or split boards and enjoy the satisfaction of reaching breathtaking viewpoints and untouched powder fields.

From the Ahorn summit, you can embark on an exhilarating ski tour down to the valley, relishing the sense of freedom and serenity of ski touring. However, continually assess the weather and snow conditions and ensure you have the appropriate equipment, including touring bindings, skins, and climbing aids.

Remember, venturing off-piste, into the backcountry, or embarking on ski touring requires careful planning, proper equipment, and respect for nature's forces. It is highly recommended that you seek the guidance of a local mountain guide who possesses extensive knowledge of the area and can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Check the avalanche forecasts, inform someone of your plans, and be prepared to adapt to changing conditions.

Guided tours

There are several guided tour options in Mayrhofen, offering a variety of activities for everyone. As mentioned above, many activities, such as ski touring and backcountry skiing, can be arranged with a guide for visitors with little to no avalanche or mountain experience. Guided snowshoe treks into the mountains are readily available for those seeking a higher perspective on the surrounding landscapes and a less adrenaline-filled excursion.

Mayrhofen – Safety measures

The Tyrol region has piste etiquette and rules everyone should follow to ensure an enjoyable but safe skiing experience. Mayrhofen has invested in state-of-the-art facilities to ensure skiers' safety.

The resort also has a mountain rescue service and team that are trained to very high standards and always ensure the pistes are well maintained and safe for skiing. Mayrhofen will close the pistes when there is not enough snow coverage, ensuring guests don’t get injured by rocks and branches while preserving the turf below the snow.

Mayrhofen – Environmental measures

Mayrhofen is considered the most eco-friendly ski resort in the Mayrhofen-Hippach Region due to several factors the resort has in place to protect the environment. Using renewable energy, such as solar power, and updating lifts from diesel engines to electricity are just a few of the things Mayrhofen Resort is doing to help make it one of Austria's most eco-friendly ski resorts.

The resort has taken the initiative to close slopes when snow levels are low to avoid turf damage and restrictions to protect flora and fauna in the region. There are adequate recycling and waste disposal options across the town and little to no single-use plastic items in restaurants and bars.
Mayrhofen is proud of its natural beauty, and locals are doing what they can to educate tourists to ensure the preservation of their homes.

Mayrhofen - Family Skiing

Mayrhofen is a great place for family skiing. There is an excellent selection of ski schools, a kids' zone on the slopes, and activities in town for all the family. Mount Ahorn has excellent wide slopes for all the family to enjoy and a great selection of blue trails for beginners.

Ski school Mayrhofen 3000 offers a child-only zone on the slopes where all ages can have an enjoyable experience learning to ski in a more relaxed setting. There is also a fantastic selection of schools with some of the best teachers in Austria covering a range of languages to make your children feel comfortable and excited to be on the slopes.

The slopes are well suited to families, and the resort is family-friendly, with easy-to-use cable cars, lifts, and more.

Après Ski

Après ski steals the spotlight in Mayrhofen, drawing visitors from far and wide. The festivities kick off a few hours before the slopes close, with lively venues near the upper lift terminals. As skiers descend towards the town, the bars near the base terminals become the epicentre of the action.

Notably, the Pilzbar and the Elchbar on the Penken side are prime spots for après ski enjoyment.
In the village, you'll discover a plethora of pubs, hotel lounge bars, and venues offering live music.

Alongside these are a couple of more prominent nightclubs. While some upscale lounge bars provide a tranquil atmosphere for a relaxed drink, most venues buzz with energy from early evening until early morning hours.

Seasonnaires often gravitate towards the beloved Scotland Yard pub, affectionately known as "Scotty's," which is a fantastic starting point for an evening of entertainment. The Garage and Apropos are typically the last bars to close, ensuring the night continues with excitement.

Mayrhofen - Accommodation Options

Mayrhofen has a fantastic selection of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to cosy guest houses and B&Bs. You are sure to find something perfect for your stay.

Hotel Sanna Pension is one of the best value-for-money accommodation options if you are looking for budget-friendly options. It is centrally located but very reasonably priced.

For a luxury stay with high-end facilities, you might want to look at Postresidenz Mayrhofen apartment hotel, where you can enjoy your own private penthouse apartment. ElisabethHotel Premium Private Retreat is also another great option, with its own pool, spa, gym, yoga room, and more on offer.

Austria's ski resorts are known for their Tyrolean architecture, rustic wooden buildings and traditional home-cooked dishes. So, if this is more your style and you prefer something a bit more cosy and local, then take a look at Hotel Garni Oblasser, and Hotel Frsterhaus.

As with every ski resort, there are always pros and cons to staying in the town centre instead of being on the outskirts. Being located in the centre gives you direct access to the ski lifts and gondolas, often meaning you can walk straight from your hotel to the bottom of the slopes. Staying outside town might mean you need to take the shuttle or bus service to reach the lifts, which can be inconvenient, especially for those who like to take the first lift.

Being centrally located has its pros: it can sometimes be busy, and noise levels can go on into the evening, especially if you are staying near bars and restaurants. If you are looking for a more peaceful and slower-paced stay, finding accommodation away from the centre may be preferable.

Several hotels welcome families, with facilities such as daycare and kids' clubs for after-ski time. If you are looking for family-friendly accommodation, look at Landhotel Denggerhof, located in the city centre, which has everything conveniently on your doorstep.

For a calming experience nestled gracefully along the level valley floor, Mayrhofen Village invites leisurely strolls and offers a serene ambience for those seeking a more calming experience outside. The area presents charming walks, particularly along the idyllic banks of the Ziller River. For a touch of romance, indulge in options like horse riding or a horse-drawn sleigh or carriage ride to explore the sights with enchantment.
